Students give minister a glimpse into the technology of the future

Five student teams, who are working on the sustainable mobility issue, invited the Minister of Energy and Climate, Rob Jetten, to come and take a look at their Future Factory. This is the business complex in Enschede where the teams’ innovative projects come to life. By making a connection between the politics and technology of the future, the student teams hope to give the transition to sustainability a valuable impulse with this visit.

This visit by the Minister of Climate and Energy took place on Monday 13 June. The five student teams called Drone Team Twente, Electric Superbike Twente, Green Team Twente, RoboTeam Twente, and Solar Boat Twente received Rob Jetten in their workshop where they work on their innovative projects every day. The minister got a tour through the workshops, with an explanation of each project. Afterwards, the teams could ask the minister their questions. Conversely, the minister’s interest in the teams was also great. Minister Jetten asked a lot about the various projects and was allowed to do a small try-out with the vehicles of several teams. In the end, the visit was a great success.

Link to politics

The student teams are concerned about their future. They believe it is important to make everyone aware of the fact that we as the Netherlands face a major challenge – realizing the energy transition as quickly as possible. The student teams want to make a valuable contribution by starting the discussion with politicians. Questions that the teams asked were, for example, about the application of hydrogen, electric mobility and the view of Minister Jetten and the government on this. By sharing their knowledge and broad view on sustainable energy sources, the teams hope to give a positive impulse to this topic.

The student teams

Drone Team Twente, Electric Superbike Twente, Green Team Twente, RoboTeam Twente, and Solar Boat Twente all design and build their own prototype with which they then compete against other teams around the world. For years they have been working on groundbreaking innovations with a sustainable character. The teams consist of ambitious students from the University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences.

They inspire in practice by attending trade fairs and visiting schools. In addition, they are present at various races on circuits and beyond. With their name and vehicles they are known worldwide as pioneers for sustainable technology.

For example, Green Team Twente achieved second place in the Shell Eco-marathon on 3 June 2022. With their cars they show that hydrogen is the solution to our energy and mobility issue. Over the years they have become European champions three times, as well as a world title in 2019.
