Enschede launches network of shared-mobility hubs at Kennispark

Enschede launches network of shared-mobility hubs at Kennispark

The municipality of Enschede wants to stimulate the use of shared transport. Therefore, with the help of € 40,000 from the Regio Deal, 25 car sharing hubs have been realized at Kennispark in Enschede as a pilot project. These are spaces where users of shared transport can park their vehicles. In this way we prevent vehicles from leading to parking problems in public spaces.

Enschede receives a subsidy of 500,000 euros from the state for the further rollout of shared-mobility hubs. In the spring of 2023, Enschede-North will be the first district to do so.

Covering network

The trial at Kennispark focuses on travelers and Kennispark employees who park their cars at the FC Twente stadium. They can then continue the last part of their journey with a shared vehicle. The trial also targets students who are increasingly using shared transport. Area organization Kennispark, together with the municipality of Enschede and the University of Twente, has created a network of shared-mobility hubs so that shared vehicles can be returned to multiple locations: the ‘back to many’ system.

Using a share bike or scooter

The Felyx and Check shared scooters and Bolt shared bicycles are available at Kennispark. Would you like to use a shared bike or scooter? It’s very easy: download the app from one of the providers, sign up and check on the map where you can find the nearest shared vehicle. Follow the instructions on the app and register your ride. Unlocking and starting is all done through the app. Fees incurred are deducted monthly via direct debit or credit card.

Please note that shared mobility providers come and go and not every provider is always located at all hubs. Should you wish to use a scooter or bicycle, check locally to see which provider is available at your location.

Free parking not allowed for long

With the arrival of the hubs, free floating, or free parking, is no longer permitted at Kennispark. The apps of the shared transport providers indicate at which hub the bikes and scooters are parked and where to put them back. All providers have programmed their bikes and scooters so that rides can only be started within the hubs. Parking outside the hubs and ending the ride there is therefore no longer possible.

Fixed location ensures recognition

Based on the experiences with the shared-mobility hubs at Kennispark, Enschede wants to expand the network neighborhood by neighborhood in the coming years. With the subsidy of € 500,000 from the Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management, the municipality wants to realize at least 150 shared-mobility hubs. These include regional hubs, district hubs and neighborhood hubs. ‘More and more residents are using shared transport and we welcome that wholeheartedly. It does mean that we have to arrange it well together,” says Alderman for Mobility Marc Teutelink. ‘When determining the locations, we involve the residents in the neighborhoods. We expect them to use the hubs more and more. A fixed parking spot ensures recognition and clarity and prevents inconvenience’.
