Brabant, Gelderland and Overijssel warn the government: without joint efforts, the Netherlands will lose its technological edge

Deputies Martijn van Gruijthuijsen (province of North Brabant), Helga Witjes (province of Gelderland) and Erwin Hoogland (province of Overijssel) presented their joint position paper this week. In it, they call on the Ministry of Economic Affairs to work together with the provinces.

The regions are the driving force behind the Dutch high-tech manufacturing industry:

  • More than two-thirds of the sector in the Netherlands
  • 90% of the chip industry
  • Ecosystems such as Brainport Eindhoven, Noviotech Campus, Foodvalley and Kennispark Twente

Without targeted investments, we risk losing our leading international position. Europe is lagging behind China and the US in strategic technologies such as semiconductors, photonics and AI. The Netherlands still has a unique position, but it is under pressure.

Together with their partners, the deputies call on the cabinet to:

  • Invest unevenly
  • Embed the National Technology Strategy in concrete terms
  • Collaborate with provinces and regional development companies such as Oost NL and BOM (Brabant Development Agency)

Technological leadership starts here, in the region, and is capitalised on at European level. Our engine is running – let’s not let it stall!
