Central parking gives impulse to further development of Kennispark

Central parking gives impulse to further development of Kennispark

On July 14, the municipality of Enschede and VONK (Property Owners and Entrepreneurs Kennispark) signed an agreement to use the parking capacity of Twente Village for the companies at Kennispark Twente. Several companies at Kennispark Twente have building or renovation plans that will result in the loss of parking spaces. To still provide sufficient parking spaces, parking at central locations is one of the solutions. This solution follows from the area strategy of the municipality of Enschede to transform Kennispark Twente into a dynamic top location. Maintaining and greening the public space is an important part of this

TOGETHER DEALING DIFFERENTLY WITH MOBILITY

By signing the agreement, both parties have expressed their intention to take the necessary measures to jointly deal with mobility differently. The greening of public space is important in this regard, as is a stronger connection between the University of Twente and the companies at Kennispark Twente.

Organizing parking differently plays a key role in this. This particularly concerns the large number of employees who arrive by car in the morning and leave again at the end of the working day. Their cars idle for the entire working day and this requires a lot of space, which can be much better used for area purposes. The car will not be completely banned from the core area. Space for parking close to buildings should always be possible for temporary visitors or employees who need to travel by car several times a day.

Alderman Jeroen Diepemaat of the municipality of Enschede: “At Kennispark we do not want more cars on the streets. In fact, we want fewer cars on the streets. This will make Kennispark much greener and more attractive. At the same time, there are many unused parking spaces on the other side of the railroad, around the Grolsch Veste. We have now made clear agreements about the use of these parking spaces. As long as it does not become too crowded with parkers around the Grolsch Veste, employees of Kennispark companies may park their cars there. I am happy that we have found a solution together and that this will accelerate the area development of Kennispark.

ECONOMIC GROWTH AND GREENING OF PUBLIC SPACE

The declaration of intent also focuses on supporting the companies at Kennispark Twente in drawing up their own mobility plan. This plan includes measures to reduce car use and to come to work more often by bicycle or public transport.

By arranging parking differently and encouraging more sustainable alternatives to the car, economic growth on Kennispark will remain possible while maintaining more high-quality public space and places to stay.

Bianca Screever (VONK): “The entrepreneurs at Kennispark Twente are pleased that we have found a good solution with the municipality for parking at Kennispark and will work together on sustainable mobility solutions. Together we are thus taking steps in further greening the outdoor area and encouraging the use of bicycles and public transport for commuting. A great win-win!
