The building was in use in Amsterdam for five years. First for the Yugoslavia Tribunal and later as temporary accommodation for the court in Amsterdam. HMO sees a great opportunity for repurposing the building at Kennispark Twente. This is possible because the four-storey building with a surface area of 5,400 m² was designed by the architectural firm cepezed in 2016 to be circular and demountable.
Fully demountable and reusable
The former courthouse consists of concrete floor elements, a steel base construction and a lot of glass. Nothing is welded, all elements are attached to each other with large screws and bolts. The exact position of each component is recorded in a 3D model. This makes it completely demountable, prevents waste of materials and energy and allows for high-quality reuse of the building.
Ready for use in a year
HMO will rebuild the building at Kennispark, in collaboration with demolition company Lagemaat and installation company Winkels. It is expected to take about a year to get the building completely ready for use. It is not yet known how long the building will remain in Enschede. If it is necessary to move the building again in the future, this is possible. Reuse is not only more sustainable, but also considerably cheaper than new construction.
Circular, demountable office buildings are the future. Why build a new office colossus when it can be done this flexible way?
