Solar Boat Twente finishes in third position in Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2023

Solar Boat Twente finishes in third position in Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2023

Solar Boat Twente participated in the tenth edition of the World Solar Boat Championship that takes place annually in Monaco. For the first time ever, the team managed to reach the podium, namely third place.

Results

On Thursday, July 6, the qualifying laps took place, where the team finished in third place. This result did not count for the final result but gave an advantage in the championship race. On Friday, July 7, the endurance race took place, where the team finished in fourth place. On the last day the slalom and championship race took place respectively. In both events Solar Boat Twente finished in third position. All in all, these positions were enough to finish in third place in the final standings.

Course of the races

The qualifying laps were very difficult. In the first lap one of the strut sleeves broke and the foil made a cut in the hull. The boat was immediately taken out of the water and patched up within this section. The boat re-entered the water just before the end of the part and so they were still able to sail the part. For the upcoming parts, the choice had been made to plug the strut holes and this made foiling impossible. The endurance was therefore sailed without foils. For the slalom and championship race it was decided to reattach one of the struts back into the boat so that the boat had an axis to turn around. This increased the maneuverability of the boat. The race for third place remained exciting until the end. At the beginning of the match race, Solar Boat Twente was tied in points for third place with another team. In a neck-and-neck race, Solar Boat Twente managed to beat this team to take third place.

Program

On Wednesday, July 5, the opening ceremony took place. On Thursday, July 6, a parade was organized and then the teams had to complete a qualifying lap. The finishing place of this determined the starting position for the championship race. On July 7, the endurance race took place. In this event, the boats had to complete as many laps as possible in 2.5 hours. On the last day, the slalom race took place first, where each boat had two chances to cover a course of buoys as fast as possible. Finally, the championship race took place. This is a garbage race in which two boats competed against each other each time. The teams with the lowest position in the qualifying laps started and each time the winner went against the team that had achieved a place higher in the qualifying laps. The day ended with the awards ceremony.

Innovation to Inspire

Besides personal development, Solar Boat Twente wants to inspire the maritime sector. After all, this sector is responsible for about 3% of global CO2 emissions. This ambitious group of students wants to show the entire world that a group of students can make sailing on solar energy efficient and profitable.
